Women’s Sport Needs To ‘capitalise On Role Models’

WOMEN’S SPORT NEEDS TO ‘CAPITALISE ON ROLE MODELS’

Women’s sport needs to capitalise from the emergence of “role models” in the Irish Women’s Rugby team.

That is the message from a Women in Sport conference at Croke Park this morning.

The success of the Irish Women’s Rugby team at the World Cup this summer brought the sport’s exposure to new levels.

Wexford camogie All Star Mags D’Arcy is attending the conference.

She hopes the added coverage can inspire more girls to take up sport.

“it’s fantastic what they’re after achieving given the funding and everything that they have” she said.

“But then again, success breeds exposure – we found that ourselves down in Wexford – winning our first All-Ireland in 2007”.

“We had six or seven clubs generate a start-up project after our win”.

“Then again, young girls at home in Wexford had role models to look at; people now in Ireland have role models to look at”.

“We have to capitalise on that exposure and bring to the forefront of people’s minds” she added.
