WICKLOW TO ROSSLARE RAIL SERVICE UNDER THREAT
Rail services from Wicklow to Rosslare are under threat due to falling passenger numbers.
The latest figures from Iarnrod Eireann show numbers travelling by rail declining on this and other routes around the country.
Rail service users on the Dublin to Rosslare line are in decline on the Wicklow to Rosslare portion of the railway.
According to figures published in today’s Irish Independent the profitability of the service is reliant on commuters from Dublin to Wicklow Station during which overcrowding is common.
Further South and through County Wexford numbers fall off substantially according to a review carried out by Iarnrod Eireann in 2012.
363,000 people used the Dublin to Rosslare line last year but most had disemdarked at Wicklow Station while on the northbound journey most only got on from Wicklow station onward.
Other stations earmarked for further scrutiny due to falling passenger numbers include the Waterford to Limerick, Limerick to Ballybrophy, Limerick to Galway and Dundalk to Belfast lines.
