WEXFORD RAIL PASSENGERS WITHOUT SERVICE AGAIN TODAY
Irish Rail passengers have been facing further disruption as the second day of strike action got underway this morning.
The work-stoppage, by SIPTU and NBRU members at Iarnród Éireann, commenced yesterday affecting thousands of commuters.
No Intercity, Commuter or DART services will operate today because of the strike by workers over pay cuts – which the company says are vital for its survival.
The move is planned to continue next month with three more days of disruption still on the cards for September 7th, 8th and 21st.
The Environment Correspondent with the Irish Independent, Paul Melia, says at the moment it looks like the action will continue.
“it doesn’t appear to be at this stage; Kieran Mulvey said on Friday that he saw no basis for an intervention – he’s chairman of the Labour Relations Commission that would deal with a lot of this” he said.
“His point was…there’s been two years of discussions about these paycuts and about these cost-savings”.
“The two sides are both very far removed from each other at this stage – so any talks would be going in with the pre-condition that they’re not going to talk about actually what’s at the centre of the dispute” he added.
