New figures revealed by the HSE show Wexford General Hospital spent almost €4,000 on burials last year.
The money was spent on the funeral and burial of patients who had no means or family members to pay for them.
The burial expenses incurred by hospitals across the country amounted to €94,000 last year with the biggest proportion of that going to hospitals in the South East region.
In a statement the HSE said where the burial expenses of a deceased person are to be met by the HSE, it is usually the Coroner or the Community Welfare Officer who arranges same.
