WEXFORD GENERAL HOSPITAL SATISFIED NO CONCERNS FOR PATIENTS OVER XRAY ERRORS
Management at Wexford General Hospital say they’re satisfied there are no safety concerns for patients after it emerged that there were errors in Xray readings carried out by three locum radiologists employed by the HSE.
One of them worked in Wexford for a period.
Meanwhile a leading consultant says the recall of hundreds of patients after the scans and X-rays were misread, highlights an over-reliance on locum doctors.
The review is ongoing and has so far led to the recall of hundreds of patients and a delayed cancer diagnosis of one person.
Consultant Oncologist, Senator John Crown, says the Irish health service relies too heavily on the use of locum doctors for day to day cover.
“One thing that is very troubling and is a systematic problems – not just in radiology, but throughout the health service, is the reliance on locum doctors” he said.
“It speaks volumes for the inadequacy of the routine services that it cannot absorb one person being on holidays, one person being sick, one person being on maternity leave without having to employ rapidly rotating locum’s” he added.
