WALLACE CALLS ON SHATTER TO FOLLOW CALLINAN’S MOVE
The Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan has resigned with immediate effect. Mr. Callinan had been under pressure over his handling of several garda matters including penalty points and the possible bugging of GSOC headquarters.
In recent days he came under sustained political pressure to apologise for remarks he made about the garda whistleblowers at the Public Accounts Committee.
Its the first time in more than 30 years that the country’s most senior policeman has resigned.
Attention now turns to the Justice Minister Alan Shatter who has consistently backed Mr. Callinan throughout the various controversies.
Independent TD Mick Wallace who exposed the cancellation of hundreds of penalty points says the Justice Minister must follow in the footsteps of the Garda Commissioner and resign.
The Wexford Deputy says Alan Shatter should follow.
“A fish rots from the head – it starts with the Minister” he said.
“The Minister has presided over a dysfunctional police force since I came into the Dail…I don’t know how the coalition government can actually stand over him”.
“Ends Kenny’s support for Minister Shatter will always be 100 percent until it becomes zero – and when that point’ll be reached we’ve yet to see” he added.
