UN SECRETARY-GENERAL SAYS IRELAND NEEDS TO DO MORE TO TACKLE MIGRANT CRISIS
The UN Secretary-General says Ireland and the EU must do more to help migrants in the Mediterranean.
Ban ki-Moon has praised the government’s “compassionate leadership” throughout the crisis, and for sending the LE Eithne to help in search and rescue operations.
Earlier this month, Ireland agreed to resettle 300 more refugees.
Ban ki-Moon says all EU countries can do more to help those in need.
“They can provide some more help; we are seeing hundreds of thousands of people who are risking their lives because they know that whether they stay in their country or not, there is no future for them” he said.
“In such a case they risk their lives out to the sea”.
“This is very dangerous, but we should address the route causes of that” he added.
