THE COST OF GETTING A TAXI GOES UP FROM TODAY

Taxi fares are set to rise by around 4 percent nationally from today.

While the initial charge for a journey has been reduced from 4 euro 10 cent to 3 euro 60 cent, the cost for the distance travelled is going up.

It means shorter fairs will cost slightly more, and medium fares up to 30km will have a more noticeable change – but longer fares will show a reduction in price.

It is the first time fares have increased since 2008.

And CEO of Dublin taxi app ‘Lynk’ Noel Ebbs says they are not likely to go up again anytime soon.

“Fares, once they’re set, stay that way for two years and…that’s written into the regulation” he said.

“So the regulator won’t look a this for another two years”.

“I think it’s very, very modest – drivers would have been expecting more, passengers probably wouldn’t have been happy with more”.

“But I think on average the NTA…certainly is saying that, in their studies, the average is 4 percent” he added.
