TAOISEACH TO TELL INSURANCE PROVIDERS THEY MUST PROVIDE FLOOD COVER

The Taoiseach and Cabinet ministers are meeting with insurance industry representatives today in an effort to convince them to start covering people again in areas where flood remediation works have been carried out.

Businesses hit by flooding are also finding it increasingly difficult to get insurance.

It comes as the clean-up operation continues in parts of Enniscorthy after the River Slaney burst it’s banks after Christmas.

Paul Kavanagh, managing director of McCarthy Insurance group, says many businesses cannot get cover.

“No, cover is not available, no absolutely not” he said.

“If you’re lucky enough to have the cover going back many years and you have a claim, the cover will be taken from you or indeed a very high excess will be put on the policy”.

“And if you’re unlucky enough to be somebody trying to start a business in those areas at the moment you won’t get any cover – and if you can’t get the cover, you can’t get the loan from the bank” he added.
