TAOISEACH RULES OUT BRINGING BACK TOWN COUNCILS FOLLOWING HOWLIN’S COMMENTS
The Taoiseach has ruled out bringing town councils back into existence.
That’s despite comments from Wexford Minister Brendan Howlin that it was his biggest disappointment while in Government.
Speaking in the Dail yesterday, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said that the Government will not be changing its mind regarding the abolition of town councils.
He was speaking after Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin raised Brendan Howlin’s recent comments in relation to the decision.
Minister Howlin acknowledged concerns that it may have been a mistake to get rid of the councils – saying people need to have an affinity to their own place.
On foot of this Deputy Martin asked if legislation would be brought before the Dáil to bring town councils back.
However Enda Kenny said the decision had been made, and that it was not going to be changed.
