SUN HOLIDAYS AND SKIN CANCER
The National Cancer Registry says sun holidays have caused a rapid rise in the cases of skin cancer.
NCRI figures in the British Journal Of Dermatology says rates of the disease almost doubled between 1994 and 2011.
It says that is down to the increases in sun holidays, with the number of new cases growing by between 6 and 10 percent between 2002 and 2011 as more people splashed out on sun getaways.
The NCRI Director is Doctor Harry Comber.
He says the findings are worrying – and are particularly noticeable in people aged 40 and under.
“Sun exposure to the point of actually getting burned is bad for your skin – which increases your chances of getting skin cancer” he said.
“But also a more serious skin caner called melanoma – and this is very definitely being shown to being related to sunburn in younger people” he added.
