STUDY PUBLISHED ON HUMAN HEALTH RISKS FROM PYLONS

Research carried out by the European Commission has failed to find definitive proof that pylons pose no risk to human health.

The study, which summarises the findings of around 500 academic research projects, says that while there appears to be no link between cancer and the exposure to electro-magnetic sources, more research is needed.

The government here has put together its own expert panel to investigate the impact both under and overground cables could have on various aspects of Irish society.

The Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore says the findings of the European Commission’s study will form part of their review.

“I think it’s right that in rolling out what is a very major infrastructure – the delivery electricity right across the country, to ensure that jobs are created right throughout the regions – that the concerns that local people have and local communities have are taken seriously by the Minister, listened to by and are addressed” he said.
