SCOTLAND VOTES TO STAY AS PART OF THE UNITED KINGDOM
Scotland has rejected independence.
55 percent of Scots voted NO – whilst 45 percent ticked the YES box.
The British Prime Minister David Cameron says he’s “delighted” with the result and has called for a period of “national unity”.
Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond says the referendum and the high turnout has been a “triumph for the democratic process”.
Meanwhile the Taoiseach says Ireland respects the decision of the Scottish people to stay in the UK.
In a statement Enda Kenny said the expected developments on deevolution for Scotland will be closely followed in this country, and we’re committed to deepening the already close relationships across these islands.
He’s highlighting the role of the Good Friday Agreement as a template for the development of relationships across the UK and Ireland, and says this country’s commitment to that is more firm than ever today.
