REVIEW OF BABY DEATHS AT GALWAY HOSPITAL FINDS DEFICIENCIES IN CARE
“Apparent deficiencies” have been identified at Galway’s Portiuncula Hospital – after two babies died while five others were deprived of oxygen.
The hospital group says the review relate to seven cases at the hospital in Ballinasloe between February and November of last year.
The hospital group says it is contacting the seven families – and it is satisfied there is no continuing concern for patient safety, with corrective measures already taken.
An independent review will now take place.
It is due to report to the health minister and HSE within three months.
The Irish Times health correspondent Paul Cullen says a number of issues were identified.
“The monitoring of the CGT scan – basically the foetal heartbeat during delivery – the administration of drugs to accelerate labour and what’s been refereed to as instrumental delivery” he said.
“These are issues which have arisen in recent controversies in other maternity units around the country in the last few years”.
“And it seems that (of) the families concerned, not all of them have been contacted yet” he added.
