OVER 600 NEW SOCIAL HOUSING UNITS TO BE BUILT IN CO. WEXFORD BY 2017
25 million euro has been allocated to Wexford County Council for social housing.
It’s part of a government drive worth 1.5 billion euro nationally to reduce housing waiting lists by a quarter by 2017.
A target of 677 units to be built or refurbished over the next two years in Wexford has been set which will reduce the waiting list in the county by 27 per cent.
Nationally the government expects almost 23,000 additional housing units to come on stream.
Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly says his department will be keeping a close eye on progress.
“Really what we are doing is we’re giving every local authority the chance to show what they can deliver – and I fully intend on rewarding local authorities that can deliver quickly and on time and in budget” he said.
“And I expect from my engagement with all the local authorities who have key demands, that they will be the ones who will deliver the most” he added.
