South East Radio’s Morning Mix book of the month in association with The Book Centre is “My Name is Leon by Kit De Waal”
The best selling debut for De Waal has been fantastically received and she recently came to Wexford, where her grandparents are from to sign copies.
Leon is 9 and growing up in the Eighties in England as a mixed race child. He knows he’s not as loved as his younger brother, and that his mother isn’t well or that interested in her kids in general. At 9 he is the caretaker of the family, and we see his world involving social services and trying to keep a family together. A heartbreaking tale, but also one of hope, and a great insight into 80’s England and it’s racial issues.
