JUST 640 WOMEN IN BREAST CANCER SCREENING TARGET GROUP ARE SEEN

It has emerged that just 640 of the 100,000 women in the target group for breast cancer screening are being seen.

The figure relates to an extension of the scheme in 2014 that saw those invited for screening extended from 65 years to 69 years.

Donal Buggy is the head of services for the Irish cancer society.

He says early detection of breast cancer is very important for successfully treatment

“It was announced by Minister Varadkar in 2014 that it would be extended and…there are 100,000 women in this group” he said.

“We estimate that when this group is fully screened an average of 87 to 89 live a year will be saved”.

“So the progress to date has been quite slow” he added.
