INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY INTO DEATH OF NEWBORN BABY AT CAVAN HOSPITAL
A full review is to be carried out into the circumstances surrounding the death of a baby at Cavan General Hospital.
The newborn passed away at the facility’s maternity department yesterday.
The hospital was at the centre of controversy previously following the deaths of three babies between 2012 and 2014.
Health correspondent at the Irish Times, Paul Cullen, says there has been talk in the past of further inquiries into those cases.
“When the Portlaoise investigation was being muted, the then-Minister for Health James Reilly suggested that he would get HIQA to also look at Cavan” he said.
“I don’t think a formal investigation was proposed, but he certainly wanted them to examine procedures in Cavan Hospital”.
“But my understanding as of last night was that that actually never happened – no formal request was made” he added.
