INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY AFTER 5 DIE IN DONEGAL
Investigations are continuing into how five members of an extended family died after their car went into the water in Buncrana in Donegal.
A baby was rescued by a man who swam out to the vehicle, which it’s understood slipped off a pier.
At about 7.30pm yesterday, a large, SUV type car was seen getting into difficulty off the pier in Buncrana.
Reporter Kieran Cuddihy is in Buncrana. He says locals helped with the rescue;
“It appears that one of the parents who was in the front of the car scrambled to get one of the children out and a baby was just passed through an open window” he said.
“It was just someone who was on the pier jumped into the water and got the baby from the water”.
“Obviously this was just seconds after it happened – there was no emergency services at the scene” he added.
The baby was taken to Letterkenny General Hosptial and is said to be stable, but his father, grandmother, aunt and two male cousins all lost their lives in what Gardai are calling a tragic accident.
It’s understood the mother of all three children was not in the car.
