HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE HAVE NO PERMANENT GP SERVICE IN PARTS OF WEXFORD
1,400 people in County Wexford have no permanent GP service.
The Irish Medical Organisation says the situation is putting the health of the public at risk.
The figures revealed today show there are two areas of County Wexford without a permanent GP service.
They are in Coolgreaney and Clonroche, where around 1,400 people are left without a primary medical service.
The situation has been ongoing for some time with both areas covered by locum or temporary GP services.
It’s a problem that is occuring in a number of areas around the country as the HSE finds it difficult to fill rural GP practices once the current doctor retires.
The IMO says there are insufficient support services avalable for GPs in rural areas and that is why there is a difficulty in attracting medics to take up the positions.
It is understood there are more impending retirements of GPs in County Wexford which may leave more areas without a regular permanent service.
