HOWLIN SAYS IT’S ‘CRAZY’ THE AMOUNT OF WATER BEING LOST THROUGH LEAKS

The Public Expenditure Minister says “it’s crazy” that the equivalent of the entire water supply of Limerick city is “flowing into the ground every day”.

Irish Water says it identified 30,000 leaks at households across the country during the first round of meter readings at the end of last year.

Over 1,000 of the leaks are each resulting in the loss of 10,000 litres a day.

Minister Brendan Howlin says it is “good news” that the leaks have been identified. But he says the level of water lost is ‘wasteful’.

“30,000 leaks so far have been detected and that’s water – I understand the equivalent of the entire water supply of Limerick city flowing into the ground every day” he said.

“Now that’s crazy, it’s wasteful, it’s environmentally unacceptable”.

“So now we have identified where the leaks are, and the leaks are going to be fixed” he added.
