FEARS FOR MORE SCHOOL STRIKES IF J.C PROPOSALS REJECTED
A crucial meeting of the executive councils of the ASTI and TUI takes place today, to determine whether they’ll accept the latest compromise Junior Cert reform plan.
Proposals drawn up by Dr Pauric Travers would see the new junior cycle split into two parts – with one section marked by the State Examinations Commission and the other by teachers.
Talks with the Department of Education have rumbled on without agreement for months and there have been two strike days, with more possible if unions reject the latest plan.
Education correspondent with the Irish Times, Joe Humphreys, says unions themselves appear to be divided over the issue.
“it’s quite clear at this point there’s a fair amount of disagreement and potentially an amount of disunity within the unions that some people feel this is as far as they can go in terms of achieving negotiations concessions” he said.
“others feel they can get more out of the department, and are pushing a tougher line” he added.
