EDUCATION MINISTER TO TAKE LEGAL ADVICE ON O’KEEFE JUDGEMENT
The Education Minister says he needs to take legal advice before commenting further on the Louise O’Keeffe judgement at the European Court of Human Rights.
The Court overturned an Irish Supreme Court ruling that the state was not liable for the actions of the principal of her primary school when he abused her in the 1970s.
Leo Hickey was subsequently jailed for three years following an investigation in the 1990s.
Louise O’Keefe has demanded an apology from the Taoiseach – Education Minister Ruairi Quinn cannot say if that will be forthcoming.
“I very much sympathise what she has gone through, I really have to take advice in relation to this matter and ensure that the full extent that was adjudicated on and what was conveyed in that 82-page judgement is conveyed to me” he said.
“As the Minister responsible, I really would like to have a chance to read the judgement and to be advised as to the implications and the consequences of it” he added.
