CONDUCT OF SOME BANKS IN PERSONAL INSOLVENCY CASES ‘NOT GOOD ENOUGH’

The Public Expenditure Minister says the conduct of some banks in personal insolvency cases is “not good enough”.

Brendan Howlin was speaking after figures reported in The Irish Times showed lenders are attempting to repossess over 7,000 homes across the State.

The Irish Mortgage Holders Organisation says the number of repossessions could reach 25,000 within the next two years.

Minister Brendan Howlin says banks should engage with their customers – instead of pushing them towards bankruptcy.

“Not all banks are engaging as they should, and that’s not good enough” he said.

“It’s not god enough from the government’s perspective”.

“I’m very attracted to the bill published by the colleague Willie Penrose – the enactment of that piece of legislation would be a very significant new lever on the banks to engage, rather than to push people into the area of bankruptcy” he added.
