CO. WEXFORD RESIDENT WHO RAPED YOUNG GIRL TO BE SENTENCED NEXT WEEK
A County Wexford resident who sexually assaulted and raped his ex-partner’s young daughter will be sentenced next week.
The man – who’s 40 – can not be named for legal reasons.
He was convicted by a jury of eight charges of sexual assault, three of oral rape and one of raping the girl at two locations in Waterford on dates between 2003 and 2008.
The man had pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to the charges at his trial last March.
Detective Garda Paul O’Flynn revealed the abuse happened when the girl – who’s now 17 – was aged six and continued until she was 11-years-old.
He said the man sent text messages saying he might have touched the girl after being admitted to hospital following a paracetamol overdose in 2008.
The man later denied the content of these messages when interviewed by gardai, attributing them to hospital staff taking his phone or the effects of paracetamol.
In a victim impact statement read to the court the 17 year old said she feels she can now have a peaceful childhood.
Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy adjourned sentencing until May 19th.
