BISHOP OF ELPHIN: GAY PARENTS OF CHILDREN NOT NECESSARILY PARENTS
A Catholic Bishop has claimed that people who have children are not necessarily parents.
Dr Kevin Doran was speaking in the context of the upcoming referendum on same-sex marriage, which he says, if passed, would undermine other marriages in Ireland.
He has accused the government of trying to pull the wool over people’s eyes in saying that the referendum is not about children, because a redefinition of marriage is also a redefinition of parenthood.
Dr Doran also claimed this morning that he believes ‘the jury’s out’ on whether people are born gay, although he acknowledged he is not an expert in the area.
Dr Doran had this to say when it was put to him that gay people in Ireland already have children.
“They may have children – but that’s the point – people who have children are not necessarily parents” he said.
“This legislation that the government is introducing – the Children and Family Relationships Bill – seems primarily focused about making it possible for people in various different relationships to have children”.
“It’s not about ensuring that children have their parents” he added.
