ASSISTANT GARDA COMMISSIONER TAKING A CASE OVER DEPUTY COMMISSIONER POST
Assistant Garda Commissioner Fintan Fanning has taken a case to the High Court over the manner of his interview for the post of Deputy Commissioner.
The North Wexford man from Kilanerin says he was uncomfortable and taken aback by the line of questioning pursued.
Fintan Fanning was interviewed for the post of Deputy Garda Commissioner on March 10th and he claimed in the High Court yesterday that he was asked for his views on Left wing political extremism in Ireland and left wing politicans.
He claimed the question came from Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan.
When the interview concluded he considered the line of questioning very unfair and that he presented to the interview board a picture that included reference to his possible political views.
Fintan Fanning told the court he did not believe other candidates were asked a similiar type of question.
He was told the following day that his interview for deputy Commissioner was unsuccessful.
Paul McGarry Senior Counsel for Mr Fanning secured permission from Justice Paul Gilligan to serve short notice of his proceedings over the competiton.
The case is against the Public Service Appointments Service, Ireland and the Attorney General and is adjourned until Tuesday.
Fintan Fanning has been a member of the Gardai since 1980 and was promoted to assistant commissioner in 2008 and is currently stationed in Mullingar as regional commissioner responsible for policing in the eastern region.
