ANTI-WATER CHARGES TD ACCUSES GOVERNMENT OF TRYING TO SCARE PEOPLE
Chasing unpaid water bills with a fast-track court system will backfire on the government.
That’s the prediction from Anti Austerity Alliance TD Paul Murphy, after details emerged of plans that are due to go to cabinet in the coming weeks.
According to reports today, Irish Water would have the power to go to the district court for an attachment order – allowing outstanding charges to be deducted from salaries or benefits before they are paid out.
Deputy Murphy is accusing the government of trying to scare people.
“The impression that they want to give, I think, is that money will simply be deducted from people – like happened with the property tax, like it’s the Revenue” he said.
“But Irish Water is not the Revenue, they don’t have the powers of the Revenue – so…I think it’s a panicked attempt to scare people, and I think people will see through it and it’ll back-fire on the government” he added.
