WEXFORD F.G TD ANNOUNCES HE WON’T CONTEST NEXT GENERAL ELECTION
Wexford Fine Gael TD Dr. Liam Twomey will not be contesting the next general election.
The medical practicioner, who has been a member of the Oireacthas since 2002, confirmed the news to South East Radio this morning.
48 year old Liam Twomey was born in Clonakility in County Cork and educated at St. Finbarr’s Seminary before studying at Trinity College in Dublin.
He entered politics as an independent in 2002 when he was first elected to the Dail after campaiging on health issues. Two years later he joined the Fine Gael Party in 2004.
Dr. Twomey lost his seat in the 2007 General Election when he was eliminated on the 6th Count, but was elected to the 23rd Seanad in July of that year.
Four years later in 2011 Liam Twomey again contested a General Election and was re-elected to Dail Eireann after securing over 9,200 first prefences votes. At that time he took the fourth seat after a battle with his party colleague Michael D’Arcy.
It’s not yet known why Mr. Twomey has decided not to contest the next general election but it’s understood to be personal reasons.
