Varadkar Hopeful Ibrc Inquiry Will Be Finished Before Next General Election

VARADKAR HOPEFUL IBRC INQUIRY WILL BE FINISHED BEFORE NEXT GENERAL ELECTION

The Health Minister says the Commission of Investigation into transactions at the former Anglo Irish Bank could go beyond the next general election.

The government last night unveiled plans for an inquiry – which will examine all write-offs at IBRC worth over 10 million euro – as well as any special interest rates which resulted in borrowers saving over 4 million euro.

Finance Minister Michael Noonan says he wants the report to be completed by the end of the year.

His Cabinet colleague Leo Varadkar says he believes that timeframe is realistic – but he admits the Investigation may not be finished until after the nation goes to the polls.

“It could, I doubt it and as I said the timeframe set is December – but in these type of things you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t” he said.

“Lots of people were calling for a Commission of Investigation, mostly opposition were demanding it – but once you do it you have to do it properly”.

“If it does mean looking at huge numbers of transactions, obviously that’s going to take time” he added.
