Catherine Murphy Raises Ibrc’s Finances With Denis O’brien In The Dail

CATHERINE MURPHY RAISES IBRC’S FINANCES WITH DENIS O’BRIEN IN THE DAIL

Independent TD Catherine Murphy yesterday used Dáil privilege to raise issues about businessman Denis O’Brien and his financial arrangements with IBRC.

The arrangements were the subject of a High Court injunction last week.

Mr O’Brien successfully stopped RTÉ from broadcasting the details, but Deputy Murphy raised them in the Dáil yesterday under privilege.

Business editor with the Sunday Business Post, Tom Lyons, says most media outlets are still not reporting on the story.

“Under the Constitution, what is said in the Dáil has absolute privilege and we know that the media has reported on things that Mary-Lou McDonald has said – in this particular case they haven’t” he said.

“Maybe it’s because there’s a sense that there’s absolute and qualified privilege, and that media only has qualified privilege in relation to this, and…there is this sense that we’re waiting for a judgment on Friday” he added.
