FEARS OVER 100 JOBS IN GOREY BRANCH OF DUNNES STORES
It’s emerged that the reason for the sudden closure of the Dunnes Stores branch in Gorey has to do with a dispute with Gorey Shopping Centre management.
Dunnes called it’s 100 workers to a meeting yesterday evening and told them the store was closing with immediate effect.
Dunnes is the anchor tenant in Gorey Shopping Centre and other tenants in the centre are wishing to advise customers they are open for business as normal.
Chairman of Wexford County Council Malcolm Byrne is calling for reason to prevail.
He’s urging both sides to resolve their issues as a matter of urgency.
Mandate union has described the decision as deplorable.
General-secretary John Douglas says workers are completely in the dark.
“There’s an instruction came down form a high, pulled the shutters down, put a notice in the window to customers saying ‘The store will crease trading’ – and that’s as much as we know” he said.
“They don’t know whether they’re being paid, they don’t know whether they’re on temporary lay-off, they don’t know whether they can go to the dole office and sign on – it’s just a deplorable way to treat 100 very loyal staff” he added.
