WEXFORD MUSSEL FARMER GOING TO SUPREME COURT OVER DEPLETION OF STOCKS
A Wexford mussel farmer is taking a case to the Supreme Court over the depletion of his mussel stocks.
He’s one of four mussel farmers from around the country who want the Supreme Court to declare the harvesting of mussel seed by foreign operators in Irish waters illegal.
Their action follows on from all four of them being encouraged by various state agencies to invest 16 million in high tech mussel fishing vessels and equipment.
Irish mussel production has fallen from 24,000 tonnes in 2002 to 5,000 tonnes in 2013.
