FORMER BOI BOSS ‘VERY SORRY’ FOR WHAT HAPPENED ON HIS WATCH
Another banker has apologised for what happened on his watch.
Brian Goggin is the former boss of Bank of Ireland and appearing before the Banking Inquiry today.
He says he always endeavoured to do his job to the best of his ability.
He also highlighted that Bank of Ireland was more conservative than other lenders – even when the crisis happened.
But Mr Goggin says the taxpayer had to bail out the bank and for that, he is apologising.
“Notwithstanding the fact that the state has been repaid in full by the bank, I regret that state assistance was required to support the bank and that shareholders lost a significant proportion of their investment in Bank of Ireland” he said.
“I am very sorry that this ultimately happened on my watch” he added.
