BULLYING IN WORKPLACE OF NURSES INCREASING
A new report from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) shows bullying in the workplace in on the rise.
A survey of its members has found there has been an almost 14 percent increase in the number of reported cases of bullying over the last 4 years.
It also shows that 6 percent of respondents said they were bullied on a daily basis.
Phil Ni Sheaghdha, INMO director of industrial relations, says increased pressure on staff in the sector, due to issues like overcrowding, is having an effect on workplace behaviour.
“Incidences of bullying has definitely increased with the cutbacks – there’s no doubt but that some organisations have a culture of tolerance, therefore when the situation gets worse and the culture isn’t tackled obviously it’s going to increase the bad behaviour” she said.
“That’s the problem; we have plenty of policies, we know how to investigate allegations of bullying that are made”.
“The problem is we’re not getting to the nub of it and we’re not preventing it happening in the first place” she added.
