REFURBISHMENT OF BEWLEYS IN DUBLIN MEANS 140 STAFF LAID OFF
The chief executive of Bewleys says he “deeply regrets” that 140 staff at the company’s Grafton Street cafe in Dublin will be laid off.
The redundancies come as the business announces plans to close the cafe for at least six months for major refurbishment works.
The 1 million euro upgrade will see the cafe close its doors next month, with the re-opening scheduled for September.
CEO John Cahill says staff at the cafe will have to re-apply for their jobs.
“What’s going to happen is that in the new operation we will have approximately 70 positions available – so again, they will be available for people to apply at the time” he said.
“At the moment, the plan is that the existing staff – because there won’t be any work available during the six month closure period – it won’t be possible for us to continue those jobs so those jobs will be lost” he added.
