OVER THREE QUARTERS OF WEXFORD RENTED HOMES FAILED INSPECTIONS

Over 75 per cent of private rented homes in county Wexford have failed inspections.

This is fifteen per cent above the national average prompting calls for landlords to undergo NCT style inspections of their properties.

More than three quarters of the almost fourteen hundred inspections of private rented accomodation in County Wexford failed a basic test of minimum legal standards for living in in 2013.

Just over one thousand of those inspected fell into this category.

These included accomodation where there was rot or dampness, did not have a fixed shower or bath with hot and cold water, where there was not a proper heat source, cooker or washing machine.

The inspections were carried out by the Department of the Environment and there are now calls from Threshhold to introduce a certification system for rented accomodation similiar to the NCT for cars.

Wexford had the highest number of rented dwelling inspections outside of Dublin in the country.
