HIQA FINDS ISSUES AT WEXFORD GENERAL HOSPITAL WHICH POSE HIGH RISK FOR PATIENTS
Wexford General Hospital’s hygiene policy has been found to be defective in the care and welfare of its patients.
That’s according to a number of inspections carried out by HIQA which were published today.
It comes as a new Emergency Department opened it’s doors to patients this morning.
The HIQA inspections were carried out at Wexford General hospital in March and April of this year.
The Health Information and Quality Authority found that best practice in hand hygiene was not in operation at the hopsital.
They found that only fifty two per cent of nurses and care assistants were to up to date with hand hygiene training.
Wexford Hospital fell short of reaching the hand hygiene compliance audit and did not report results of the National Hygiene Audit for October of last year.
The hospital said this happened due to a lack of resources.
HIQA said 114 hand wash sinks needed to be upgraded to meet current standards of design.
Other issues identified in the report included an issue with isolation rooms, chipped paint preventing proper cleaning and a dusty trolley.
The hospital will be issuing a statement on the matter this afternoon.
