COUNTY WEXFORD COUNCILLORS SALARIES REVEALED
The costs involved in having councillors in County Wexford has come under scrutiny.
A detailed report by the New Ross Standard newspaper found that almost 1.8 million euro has gone towards paying councillors over the last 5 years.
David Looby who wrote the article says it focused on the costs involved from 2009 to 2013.
A further 720 thousand was spent on members expenses and 175-thousand on corporate expenses.
Gorey Fianna Fáil councillor Malcolm Byrne has defended the costs saying councillors are not making a profit from their positions.
He says councillors earn 16-thousand 700 euro gross pay a year along with money for travel, subsistence a and phone calls.
He says in his case and in the case of his fellow councillors they don’t do it for the money.
