SPORT: GAA REPORTEDLY IN ‘ADVANCED’ TALKS WITH SKY SPORTS FOR GAMES
The GAA is said to be in “advanced negotiations” with Sky Sports with a landmark deal expected to be announced next week.
It is understood the association will agree a three-year deal with the satellite broadcaster which will see up to 14 games per season shown behind the Sky paywall.
A number of TDs have already voiced their opposition to the move. They say they will raise it with the Communications Committee.
However former GAA President Nicky Brennan is downplaying its impact.
“RTE will have The Sunday Game so games will be shown on The Sunday Game also, and there will be other highlights during the course of the week” he said.
“So it’s not as if we’re taking the games completely from free-to-air”.
“And also the bulk of the games…it’s speculated that RTE will still have the dominant number of games – and the number of games I understand is increasing from 40 to 45”.
“So there is still a huge amount of games available to terrestrial TV” he added.
