Tributes are being be paid to former Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave who’s died at the age of 97.
President Michael D Higgins says he was committed to serving the people of Ireland with all of his energy, intellect as well as passion.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said Ireland had lost a great statesman while former Taoiseach Enda Kenny described Mr Cosgrave as a man of great loyalty, old fashioned courtesy and personal warmth.
Liam Cosgrave became Taoiseach in 1973 after 16 years of Fianna Fail led Government.
He was instrumental in the setting up of the Sunningdale Agreement in 1973 which aimed to bring powersharing to Northern Ireland and was seen as one of Cosgrave’s greatest achievements as leader despite it’s collapse.
This deal set the basis for what would eventually become the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
Wexford Minister Paul Kehoe praised Cosgrave for being “dedicated to public life and being a counsel to everyone”.
