Efforts are underway to recover a body found in the wreckage of Rescue 116. The discovery came yesterday as divers also recovered the Coast Guard Helicopter’s black box recorder. The wreckage of the helicopter has been found 40 metres below sea level off the coast of County Mayo. However at this stage the remains have NOT been formally identified. The deceased remains at sea and efforts have resumed to recover the body from the water. Captain Dara Fitzpatrick, Paul Ormsby, Mark Duffy and Ciaran Smith were the crew on board the aircraft which came down just under a fortnight ago. Captain Fitzpatrick has since been laid to rest. Meanwhile today, the black box recorder will be transferred to the UK for specialist examination – it’s expected to be a number of days before its data is downloaded and deciphered. The families of the missing crewmen are keeping a vigil at Blacksod.
