PUBLC EXPENDITURE MINISTER ON WHISTLEBLOWER

The Public Expenditure Minister says he won’t “take sides” between Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe and Commissioner Martin Callinan – saying everyone is entitled to “fair hearing”.

Brendan Howlin made the comments on his way into this morning’s Cabinet meeting – where Ministers could sign-off on an independent inquiry into allegations that serious crimes, including murder, weren’t properly investigated.

Last night, Sergeant Maurice McCabe denied the Garda Commissioner had directed him to co-operate with an inquiry into the cancellation of penalty points.

Minister Brendan Howlin says the Government will consider a Commission of Investigation into the matter.
